Rec Center is off and running in year 2

By KENT THOMPSON
Exceeding expectations is always a good thing.
That’s exactly what the Humboldt Recreation Center (HRC) has done in its first year of operation in Humboldt.
After one year in the books (the Recreation Center) opened on Dec. 3, 2018 with much fanfare and many positive responses from the community.
The brainchild of Ken and Marilyn Nielsen with the large field house inside the 70,000 square foot recreational facility named in their honor, HRC has went above and beyond what Humboldt city leaders thought was possible.
“We currently have over 1,300 memberships from a starting point of 800 memberships. We were confident that the facility would cash flow at 450 members, so to have nearly three times that many is beyond our wildest beliefs,” Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken said.
The success is a credit to the staff, the city administrator believes.

Rasmussens tell local story in video

Humboldt County pork producers Lisa and Kevin Rasmussen are shown tending to pigs in one of their barns. The couple was recently featured in a video which can be seen at iowapork.org.

By Jeff Gargano
Local farmers Kevin and Lisa Rasmussen are featured in a new video that can be seen at www.iowapork.org/we-care-rasmussens/.
It’s part of the We Care, Iowa campaign that began in October. The campaign began after a year of planning and development, which was overseen by the Iowa Pork Producers Association Issues Management Task Force.
The purpose is to tell the story about pig farming in Iowa and to engage in meaningful conversations with those who don’t understand pork production.
The Rasmussens share their story about their pig finishing operation, and how their family and business are integral in their Humboldt County community.
Kevin, who serves on the public relations committee for the Iowa Pork Producers, said the committee all agreed they need to do a better job of getting their message out to the public.
