Meals from the Heartland meal raising is March 21

Last year, the Humboldt County Meals from the Heartland program was honored for packaging more than 1,000,000 meals, a milestone that occurred in 2018. This year's event will mark the 10th year in Humboldt for the activity. This year's event will be Friday, March 20 for students and Saturday, March 21 for the public.

Saturday, March 21, will be the 10th annual Meals from the Heartland event at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall.
Students from the Humboldt Middle School and St. Mary’s School will be packaging meals on Friday, March 20.
Humboldt County is the largest and longest running packaging event in the state of Iowa outside of Des Moines, with over one million meals packaged during the event’s nine-year history.
Our local food pantry receives meal kits packaged by our local church youth groups, using the rice meal and either cans of tuna or chicken with recipes.
Some meals go to other food pantries in the state of Iowa. The remainder is sent to several countries where they are used for school lunch programs. The students go to school so they can receive a meal and therefore they are getting educated. There are students who have graduated and now are coming back to their country to help educate other students in their community.

Darling to remain on paid administrative leave

By Phil Monson
Humboldt School Superintendent Greg Darling will finish out the school year on paid administrative leave.
In a special meeting of the board of education on Friday morning (Jan. 31), the board voted 3-0 to keep Darling on paid administrative leave through June 30, 2020, as per the terms of the agreement.
The vote came after the board met for 26 minutes in closed session. Board members present who voted for the continued leave include Kathy Yoakam, Suzanne Newton and president Tate Satern. Board members Kristi Clark and Bob Myott were not present.
Darling’s paid administrative leave began immediately after action by the board back in their Jan. 20 regular monthly meeting. At that time, Satern issued a statement that the action against Darling “does not involve allegations of misconduct against students, misappropriation of funds or any other illegal activity.”
