Awards distributed at Wildcat wrestling banquet

Humboldt High School wrestling coach Chad Beaman (right) presented the Michelle Jensen Memorial Scholarship ($1,000) to senior Cole Nelson. Nelson placed 3rd at 106 pounds in the Class 2A state tournament back on February 22. Independent photo.

The Humboldt High School Wrestling Banquet, held March 10, was a night to celebrate a bevy of accomplishments.
Conference dual Co-Champs, winners of 20 plus duals for the fourth straight year, 90 dual wins for the career of the senior class, State Duals qualifiers, the first ever Girls State Champion in Kendal Clark and third place state finisher Cole Nelson. Those were a few of the many accolades earned by the HHS wrestling teams.
But it wasn’t all celebration as head coach Chad Beaman had a message for his wrestlers.
“We want to get right back in the mix. We have a lot of work to do,” Beaman said. “I’ve already got 10 or 11 things we are going to do different in practice. We were good. We need to get better.”
Beaman encouraged the underclassmen to make great decisions over the next eight months, work on their grades and put in the time in the off season.

County prepares for COVID-19

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer Michelle Sleiter said the hospital staff is prepared, equipped and has the training to take on the COVID-19 outbreak.

By Kent Thompson
City Halls, the county courthouse, restaurants and movie theaters may be closing, but important facilities like the North and South Care Centers, Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) and UnityPoint Clinic - Family Medicine Humboldt, will remain open, and are the first line of defense in protecting the local population from the spread of the Novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, a viral infection that is being called a global pandemic. In the case of the hospital and clinic, their professionals will be charged with the responsibility of treating the sick.
Both North and South Care Centers, Springvale Assisted Living and HCMH Long-Term Care have instituted "no visitor" policies for the time being in order to protect vulnerable populations of our community.
“We are following the guidelines of the Iowa Department of Public Health, CMS and our local health officials,” Care Center Administrator Leslie Smith said.

The Humboldt School District is making plans to educate students online over the next four weeks. That was the word at Monday's Humboldt Board of Education meeting.
“The administrative team discussed this morning on how students could take online classes. We also discussed a list of resources parents can use once we get to that point, along with providing resources for parents with special needs students,” Interim Superintendent Mike Sherwood said. “Once we provide the resources, then we have to make sure there is Internet access for all students.”
“We’ll be finding out who has Internet access and who doesn’t. How do we match those resources and specific needs? I know Greg (Wickett) is working on providing Google Classroom and resource training videos for staff to be able to post things online,” Sherwood said.
