Pandemic forces spring coaches, athletes to put everything into perspective

Humboldt High senior sprinter Kaylee Heston nears the finish line in the Wildcats' one and only track meet of the 2020 season, held back on March 12 inside the recreation center. The season was suspended in mid-March and later canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Independent photo.

With the cancellation of the spring sports season due to the coronavirus pandemic, Humboldt High School spring sports coaches and their athletes have had to deal with the frustration and yet accept reality of the situation.

The Wildcat boys’ soccer team came within one win of the state tournament last year and with a solid group of returnees back, including a solid senior class, hopes were pretty high going into the 2020 season for head coach Joe Hadar and his squad.

“The guys have kept it in perspective. Yes, it is very disappointing to see our season get canceled and I feel bad for the seniors that they didn’t get to play in their final seasons here. But this forces us to look at the bigger picture as well,” Hadar said.

Berte's beef operation continues to expand

Josh and Bree Berte enjoy doing chores together on their integrated crop and livestock farm northeast of St. Joe. Josh runs Berte Construction, building sheds and other outside structures while farming. Humboldt Independent photo by Kent Thompson.

By KENT THOMPSON
Where there’s a will there’s a way.
That would be a good byword for Josh Berte of rural Bode. Josh has built a successful business and a farming operation all from the ground up.
Starting out with only 10 cows 14 years ago, he now has a 40-head Red Angus/Simmental cow-calf herd and he custom finishes about 24,000-head of market hogs per year, all while operating his own building construction business. Just this past year, the 30-year-old Berte started row crop farming with his Godfather, Pete Erpelding.
“We had a really good calving season this year. There were no (delivery) problems and we had an average of more than one calf per cow, as the last one had a set of twins. It was an even split between bulls and heifers,” Berte said.
Read more about Josh's beef enterprise in our Salute to Area Beef Producers section in this week's Humboldt Independent.

Elementary education and literacy in new principal's background

Lora Kester of Marshalltown has been chosen as the new curriculum director and principal for the Mease Elementary School students for the 2020-21 school year. She will begin her duties July 1.

By Phil Monson
When Lora Kester began her search for an educational leadership position last winter, she was selective in what school district and community she would like to live and work.
When Humboldt’s opening for curriculum director and Mease Elementary School Principal came up, in her eyes Humboldt was at the top. After learning the Humboldt Board of Education approved her hiring at their April 14 meeting, Kester was elated about her new career opportunity.
Kester’s contract calls for her to serve 25 percent as Mease Elementary School Principal and 75 percent as the district-wide curriculum director.
Kester is currently a literacy consultant for the Central Rivers Area Education Agency in Marshalltown. She is the team lead for the agency. She has held her position with the AEA for the past five years.
