Lange named 2nd team

In unprecedented fashion, Humboldt’s talented softball team had four players named to the all-state team, released last week by the Iowa Coaches Association.
Humboldt, which swept to its fifth straight North Central Conference championship and its third state tournament trip in four years, had a trio of first-team selections and one second-team pick.
Senior pitcher Ellie Jacobson and senior centerfielder Carlie Thompson were named to the first-team, along with junior first baseman Kendal Clark. Senior catcher Mady Lange was chosen second-team.
Jacobson was also selected for the elite senior all-star game. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the contest was not played.
They helped the Wildcats post an overall record of 20-3, 7-0 and champions of the NCC for the fifth consecutive year.

2nd county COVID death reported

The Humboldt County Department of Public Health has announced the second death associated with novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the county. The individual was in the 61-80 age group. The death was reported Monday, Aug. 17.
“We extend our sincere condolences to this individual’s loved ones,” said Humboldt County Public Health Director Joleen Sernett.
This loss is a reminder that we must all do our part to protect our most vulnerable. This means to stay home if you are sick, maintaining six feet distance from those outside of your household, washing your hands often, and wearing a face covering when social distancing is not possible.

Social Distancing, masks and improved ventilation cited as school needs

Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray outlined the district's Return to Learn plan at Monday's Humboldt Board of Education meeting. The Board then adopted the plan. Murray said the district will follow protocols provided by the Iowa Department of Public Health and Humboldt County Public Health. Murray said the school will work hand in hand with HCMH and Humboldt County Public Health.

After a report from school administrators Monday night, the Humboldt School Board gave its final approval to the district’s Return To Learn plan in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.
Final action came in the board’s regular monthly meeting Aug. 17.
“Social distancing will be practiced to the fullest level possible,” Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray said, noting general mitigation strategies have been sent out to parents of students enrolled for the new school year, which begins next week.
“When we can’t social distance, we will be requiring masks to be worn by students and staff. We will be limiting student groupings whenever possible with assigned seats possible on buses,” Murray said.

Supervisors consider adding projects to bond issue

Finding a solution of what to do with the Reasoner Dam in Humboldt and mitigations for landowners and users upstream is one matter that may be funded in part by a general obligation bond issue the county is considering. With new projects outline this past week, the not to exceed amount is around $2.7 million. Humboldt Independent file photo.

“It’s Christmas in Humboldt,” District 3 Supervisor Rick Pedersen exclaimed, in reference to several local leaders in attendance at Monday’s Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting.
While the entities in question weren’t asking for a handout, with the county considering borrowing funds at around 1.2 percent interest on a 10-year note, there are several public needs that could be rolled into a refinancing of the Law Enforcement Bond issue of 2015, in addition to more than $790,000 in communications upgrades to the county radio tower and related equipment.
The Board heard from Humboldt County Conservation Director Todd Lee. Lee said the Humboldt County Conservation Board is interested in seeing an improved West Fork of the Des Moines River by taking out, lowering or improving the low-head dam at Lake Nokomis. Lee told the Board that $500,000 over the length of a 10-yeard bond would be a good start.
