Heavy voting already as election day nears

By KENT THOMPSON
Hotly contested national races, a three-way contest for Humboldt County auditor and unprecedented absentee and vote early balloting is creating a perfect storm of activity. At least for political junkies. For most of the rest of us, if we never see another political attack ad on TV it will be too soon.
Humboldt County Auditor Peggy Rice, who is concluding her 37th year with the auditor’s office, said she cannot recall a year when there has been more early voting and political activity. A worldwide pandemic has had a lot to do with that.
Rice reports that the county has already received more than 2,300 absentee ballots. In-person early voting is also running strong, as many as 70 people on one day!

HCSD keeps a close eye on school COVID cases

Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray updated the Board of Education and the public on what the school is doing to monitor and limit the spread of COVID-19 cases among students.

By Phil Monson
As the coronavirus has seen a surge in the county lately, the Humboldt Community School District continues to closely monitor the situation.
During the regular monthly meeting of the Humboldt School Board Monday night (Oct. 26), School Superintendent Jim Murray and his administrative team updated the board on efforts the district has taken to keep students safe.
Murray says 25 elementary school students and 48 secondary level students continue to take classes online through the Edgenuity program.
“If a student isn’t making good progress after having attempted to take classes through this online program, then we will be contacting those students and their parents to inform them they will need to come back to the school,” Murray said.

44 new COVID cases in the past week

By KENT THOMPSON
Like many areas of the country, Humboldt County Public Health is reporting a spike in positive cases in the county, with 44 new positive cases in the past week and 10 reported on Monday, Oct. 26.
That brings the total in the county since the pandemic arrived, March 12 to 329. (Humboldt County’s first positive case was reported April 18.) Of that number, 227 have recovered and there are 102 active positive cases in the county. The 14-day positivity rate is 15.5 percent (as of Tuesday, Oct. 27.) Anything more than 15 percent and the local school district can ask the governor for a waiver to allow online learning, but the school district must also have a 10 percent absentee rate and neither Humboldt, St. Mary’s, Twin Rivers or Gilmore City-Bradgate have reached that threshold.
