Health officials talk vaccine rollout

Humboldt County Memorial Hospital CEO Michelle Sleiter reported this week that the first doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine could be arriving as early as next week, if the drug is approved by the FDA Thursday. Sleiter said Humboldt County should be getting enough doses to vaccinate health care providers, hospital and clinic staff and long-term care and nursing home residents in the community.

“With the recent approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination, we want to share with you what that may mean for Humboldt County,” Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michelle Sleiter and Humboldt County Director of Public Health reported this week.

Miranda Peterson, who lives west of Humboldt, has been hired as the director of the newly established Moffitt Animal Shelter at 1308 19th St. N. in Humboldt. She is pictured next to a photo of shelter benefactor Mary Moffitt. Humboldt Independent photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
One of the requirements for the new director of the Moffitt Animal Shelter in Humboldt was to be an animal lover.
If having five dogs and five cats and having rescued several unwanted animals and found homes for them qualifies, the non-profit Humboldt County Animal Shelter Board believes they have found the right person in Miranda Peterson of Humboldt.
Peterson was hired as the shelter director and began her duties on Nov. 30.
A teacher by profession, Miranda has been a stay at home mom to four children and has helped her husband in the business office of his company, CJC Mechanical Solutions.
“This is my dream job,” Peterson said. “People know I care about animals.”

Humboldt County reports decrease in active cases

Humboldt County reported 16 new positive cases of COVID-19 on Monday, Dec. 14, 13 cases on Tuesday, Dec. 15, and only three new cases on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
That brings the total since the pandemic started to 879 positive cases. Of that number, 832 have recovered with 16 deaths. “Ten additional deaths in the county were reported Monday. While this is a significant jump from the number we last shared, the Iowa Department of Public Health made changes in its reporting structure,” Humboldt County Public Health reported. The deaths reported have occurred over the past several weeks and not since the Dec. 9 report.
Good news is that the number of active cases in the county have declined from 79 at the beginning of the week to 31 on Wednesday.
Of the three new cases reported Wednesday, one was in the 18-40 age category and two people were ages 41-60.
