Humboldt woman arrested on vehicle burglary charges

A Humboldt woman has been arrested and charged with three counts of burglary from a motor vehicle, all aggravated misdemeanors. Jessica Webb, 34, of Humboldt, is currently in the Humboldt County Jail, awaiting an initial appearance in magistrate court.
According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 25, the Webster County Sheriff’s Office alerted area agencies that a 2010 Ford Edge had been stolen from Duncombe during the overnight hours.
At 11:45 a.m. that morning, the Humboldt Police Department (HPD) received a report that a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado had been stolen and was parked in the 700 block of Sumner Avenue.
An officer responded to the scene and found that the Ford Edge stolen from Duncombe was parked in downtown Humboldt, but the Chevrolet Silverado was missing. The HCSO and HPD searched the Humboldt and Dakota City areas, but were unable to locate the stolen Chevy truck.

DC man sentenced on meth charges

A Dakota City man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison on drug charges.
Tyler Tinken, 37, of Dakota City, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, distribution of meth and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. He was sentenced Monday, Dec. 7, in federal district court in Sioux City.
Evidence showed that from July-Nov. 14, 2019, Tinken was involved in a conspiracy that distributed methamphetamine in the Humboldt and Sac County areas. On multiple occasions in September and October 2019, Tinken distributed just over a pound of pure methamphetamine to individuals who were cooperating with law enforcement in a sting operation. During a search of Tinken’s vehicle and residence in Dakota City in November 2019, law enforcement authorities seized more than 650 grams of pure methamphetamine that Tinken possessed with intent to distribute to others.

Murray Bridge denied funding, but study approved

The Murray Bridge, constructed in 1905, was built for horse and buggy travel. The county is interested in replacing the bridge over the West Branch of the Des Moines River. The county heard disappointing news Monday that it will not qualify for federal grant BUILD funding this year, but the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors agreed Monday to go ahead with studies and analysis for possibly replacing the bridge in the not too distant future. The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors spent the final 40 minutes of Monday’s meeting discussing whether or not to proceed with study and analysis of a possible relocation of the Murray Bridge in Avery Township.
Minutes after the discussion, with the Board agreeing to a $102,733 expenditure for study and analysis, Humboldt County Engineer Ben Loots reported back to the Board that he had received a call back from the committee chair with the news that the Murray Bridge was not one of the eight projects chosen for selection for the current fiscal year.
The county was applying for discretionary grant funding through the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program through the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“The NEPA study is not cheap,” Loots remarked.

The high-tech Christmas light display at the Kelly and Ryan Bowman residence in the 500 block of 4th Avenue North in Humboldt continues to grow.
Not only that, there are more user-friendly options for motorists who stop by to take a look at his ever-changing light display which is computer-driven in its color and intensity.
“We are excited to share our Christmas lights for the third year,” Ryan said. “We have several additions to the show, including a 20-foot tall light tree and a big wreath over the front window.”
Each individual LED light bulb is addressable by the computer, which can turn the light off or on and control the color and brightness to create a wide variety of images outside the home.
Anyone traveling north on 5th Street can’t help but notice the Bowman home in the evening when the light display illuminates the neighborhood.

Livestreaming of high school sporting events

With only limited fans able to attend high school sporting activities due to COVID-19 restrictions, having livestreaming of the Humboldt athletic events available has been a huge positive.
The Humboldt Athletic Booster Club has worked with Humboldt Athletic Director Greg Thomas to make the livestreaming a reality.
The events are livestreamed on the Humboldt Wildcat Productions channel on YouTube. The Humboldt Athletic Booster Facebook page has also been utilized for streaming.
“The main thing is to give people access that wouldn’t be able to come to games due to spectator limits,” Thomas said. Currently, the state of Iowa allows two spectators per participant at high school events. Middle school events remain suspended.
“We’ve had nothing but positive feedback about having it available and the quality of the livestream,” Thomas said.
The livestreaming is offered at no charge.
