Land that used to be farmed is now teaming with wildlife thanks to conservation efforts of Doug and Lorrie Bacon.
The Bacons initiated a number of conservation efforts into their farm south of Humboldt, including a CRP windbreak and sizeable habitat buffer along the West Fork of the Des Moines River. Through continued maintenance and care, this area is now a good place to find pheasants, deer and turkeys.
For their efforts, the Bacons were awarded the 2020 Wildlife Habitat Award from the Humboldt Soil and Water Conservation District.
The Bacons purchased 40 acres from Chantland-PVS Company 17 years ago. The land included 25 acres north of the Chantland south plant, and 15 acres south of the plant, a timber area.

Assessor reports increases in residential and commerical properties expected

Humboldt County Assessor Linda Fallesen told the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors on Monday that higher valuations for residential and commercial property can be expected from this year's assessments, while ag land should stay about the same.

Humboldt County Assessor Linda Fallesen reports that residential value changes will vary based on location, but the average increase county wide will be between 5-10 percent. Based on the 140 residential sales that occurred in 2020, the median assessment level was 90 percent. State law requires assessors to maintain a 5 percent margin (from 95-105 percent median assessment level). Multi-residential properties saw similar increases with an average countywide increase of 17 percent.
During the COVID-19 crisis, some commercial properties were negatively affected, while some were positively affected. In Humboldt County, the adjusted median assessment on all commercial properties was 78.65 percent. To be within the allowable state tolerance of assessment level, the overall value of commercial property can expect a 20 percent increase.
