Humboldt Council approves major project

Workers remove sludge from the aeration basin last spring at the city's wastewater treatment plant south of town. On Monday night the Humboldt City Council approved plans for $3.4 million in improvements over the next 2-3 years. File photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
The Humboldt City Council on Monday approved a facility plan and an intended use plan for improvements to the city’s 21-year-old wastewater treatment plant on Gotch Park Road.
The work is likely to include a $3.4 million price tag.
On Monday, the Council heard of necessary and planned improvements from professional engineers Jennifer Ruddy and Lance Aldrich with Fox Engineering.
Not only are several elements of the 21-year-old plant nearing the end of their useful life, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is requiring that cities remove total nitrogen and total phosphorus, something the Humboldt plant cannot do without considerable improvements.
