Westling wraps up soccer career at Iowa Central

Amber Westling

Amber Westling, a former Humboldt High soccer standout and 2019 HHS graduate, looks back fondly on her last two years playing for the Tritons.

“It was a lot different from high school. In high school you would have a one or two-hour bus ride to an away game. In my freshman year at Iowa Central, we had a nine-hour bus drive to Coffeyville, in Kansas. That’s near the border of Kansas and Oklahoma. That was during pre-season,” Westling said.

“In my freshman year, we had pre-season practices twice a day, morning and afternoon,” Westling said.

Goedken hired by Decorah; Council agrees to search firm

Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken will be ending his 5.5 year tenure with the city in early September. He will be becoming the new city manager for the city of Decorah. Read more about this story in this week's Humboldt Independent.

By KENT THOMPSON
Minutes after the Humboldt City Council accepted a letter of resignation from Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken on Monday, the Decorah City Council approved a contract offer to have Goedken serve as that city’s new city manager.
Goedken’s resignation will be effective Thursday, Sept. 9. In his letter of resignation, Goedken said Humboldt has been a great community for him professionally and for his family.
“We have seen several great projects come to fruition over the past several years, that many other communities dream to accomplish. We have forged great relationships that will continue beyond my tenure,” Goedken said in his resignation letter. He said the overriding factor in the decision was family considerations. Goedken grew up near Dubuque, as did his wife, Tara, and said it was a 3-1/2-hour drive to attend a recent event for a niece. “Decorah will be only 1-1/2 hours and one hour to some of our family,” he said.

Just in time for Livermore Daze, the Livermore American Legion, Otto Field Post No. 415, comes to the community’s rescue.
The Legion basement has been a meeting area for not just Legion members, but for public gatherings for many years. Since the Livermore Community Center closed several years ago, people like to have a place to congregate and socialize.
“Like every other organization, we were hurt by COVID-19,” Legion member and Team Livermore organizer Steve Larson said.
Otto’s 415 was born, the lounge will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 4:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. The bar has beer and wine and is working on obtaining a liquor license to serve mixed drinks.

KEVIN DRESSER

Humboldt native and Iowa State wrestling coach Kevin Dresser, has agreed to a contract extension through June 2026.

It’s the third season in a row the Cyclones have qualified eight or more wrestlers for the national tournament.
