Plans underway for new Wildcat Wonderland in 2022

Just as the original Wildcat Wonderland Playground took a lot of thought and planning, so too is the new Wildcat Wonderland.
If plans can be finalized this fall and final pieces of the funding puzzle put together, a new Wildcat Wonderland in Taft Park, could be realized by the summer of 2022.
Wildcat Wonderland has served a tremendous need for children and their families, but its 25-year lifespan has ended, and a new structure is needed.
Humboldt Parks Director Clayton Vorland and Taft Elementary Principal Ryan Fedders both agree that a new Wildcat Wonderland will be incorporating a lot of things that make the current playground unique and special, while adding more modern and safer play structures and landscapes.

After a livestock only fair in 2020, the 2021 Humboldt County Fair is back with a full line-up of entertainment.
It’s been many years since the fair has had a Demolition Derby, but the 2021 Humboldt County Fair (July 20-26) marks the return of a Demolition Derby on Saturday evening, July 24, at 6 p.m.
Fair Board President Jeff Haselhuhn said a demolition derby promoter has added the Humboldt County Fair date as one of their stops.
“That means there will be a lot of cars in the demo derby. It should be a tremendous show. Demo derbies are becoming very popular,” Haselhuhn said.
The Humboldt County Fair Board has purchased a number of concrete barriers to secure the large area that will be used for the demo derby in front of the grandstand.
Outlaws Tractor/Pickup Pull will take place on Friday night, July 23, at 7 p.m.

Eagle Scout projects benefit community

Humboldt Boy Scout Eli Keenan stands inside a gaga ball pit he constructed at the Sheldon Park campground, south of Lower Sheldon Park. It was his Eagle Scout project. When you saw Old Glory waving as the parade passed by this week, did you give any thought to who puts up the flags, takes them down and cares for them?
In the case of the Avenue of Flags on Sumner, the group entrusted with ensuring that the flags are mounted and are in a sound and respectful condition are the Scouts BSA, Troop 108.
And while you probably didn’t give that aspect of the Red, White and Blue much heed, 17-year-old Boy Scout Aaron Boleyn did. Aaron is a member of the local troop and it bothered him that after the flags were taken down after patriotic holidays like Memorial Day, the 4th of July and Veteran’s Day, they just sat on folding tables in the old Humboldt Fire Station, north of city hall.
So Aaron decided to create flag carriers for his Eagle Scout project. Read about his work in this week's Humboldt Independent. Subscribe today by clicking on the link at the top of this page.
