Big 4th planned in Humboldt area

Harness races will be going on this Saturday and Sunday at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds, part of several 4th of July activities going on. Post time both days is 12:30 p.m.

Fireworks
What would an Independence Day celebration be without a super fireworks display? On that count, Russ Seiler and his group of volunteers always deliver.
The group is planning on having another fantastic fireworks display at the Humboldt County Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 4 at around 10 p.m.
“KHBT will be playing some patriotic music and we are planning on having a good show,” Seiler said.
The Humboldt City Council earlier this summer approved $12,000 in hotel/motel tax receipts to pay for this year’s display. Humboldt firefighters will be walking the parade route Sunday evening asking watchers to “fill the boot,” to help pay for next year’s exposition.
“We’ll be using the five-inch shells again. We go through J&M Displays in Yarmouth. They put on shows throughout the U.S. and do an excellent job for us. We have been working with them for a number of years,” Seiler said.

Cooler fresh microbrews now in Humboldt

Larry Beilke is opening the TractorLift Brewery Taproom soon. The taproom is located at 708 Sumner Avenue, next to 716 Main.

Something new in downtown Humboldt is the TractorLift Brewery Taproom, which is opening soon.
Located in a newly remodeled building at 708 Sumner Avenue (next to the 716 Main restaurant), TractorLift Brewery Taproom features nine of Larry Beilke’s 18 beers on tap as well as a selection of Iowa wines. It’s open for business Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Patrons can bring in their own food.
Larry Beilke, owner of TractorLift Brewery, obtained a license to brew beer in December of 2015. He started brewing the beer in the back of the building and had plans to move the business to the old Post Office location, but then COVID-19 came and the plans changed.
“We decided with some remodeling this building would have enough space for a small taproom,” Beilke said.

County formulates way to spend $1.8 million

Paisley Nostrom learns that calves can sometimes be stubborn when it comes to being led around. She was an exhibitor at last week’s Humboldt County Cattlemen’s cookout and bucket calf show at the fairgrounds. Humboldt County taxpayers support the upcoming fair through an annual $25,000 contribution. The 2021 Humboldt County Fair is just over two weeks away, July 20-26.

By KENT THOMPSON
While not as daunting as implementing the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, Humboldt County’s portion (an estimated $1.8 million), needs to be spent.
On Monday, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors met with Humboldt County Economic Development Director Alissa O’Connor and Humboldt County Conservation Director Todd Lee to figure out ways to do that.
Humboldt County Auditor Trish Erickson reported that the county now has its nine-digit Dunn and Bradstreet number and its SAM (System for Award Management) number. The SAM code is required for every entity registered to do business with the federal government.
Now, Humboldt County must come up with a plan to appropriately spend the funds for qualified expenses by Dec. 31, 2026. The deadline for submitting the plan is by Aug. 31 of this year.
