Humboldt fourth-year head football coach Derrick Elman isn’t making any pre-season predictions on how 2021 will unfold for his team over the next two months.

But Elman is quick to smile when he talks about the return of 27 letterwinners and the leadership from a large and talented senior class. Ingredients to build on last year’s 5-4 squad that went 1-1 in the playoffs.

“One of the bigger indicators of how successful you may be going into a given season, it would be the leadership out of our senior class. Last year senior leadership really came through in our games,” Elman said. “We got a first round playoff win over Heelan and then we went up to Spencer and almost beat a good Spencer team that nobody thought we could come close to beating.”

Kara Waldorf era begins in Humboldt volleyball

Kara Waldorf begins her first year as Humboldt head volleyball coach with high expectations.

While graduation losses from last year’s conference championship and state tournament team were heavy, Waldorf and her squad remain undeterred as they embark on a new season.

“I’m impressed with the girls. I feel like they came into pre-season practice and showed a lot. We had a coach come in from Des Moines to run the camp and these girls really brought it to that camp and it was fun for him to be able to work with them and for me to be able to observe,” Waldorf said. “I was able to gauge where their skill level is and their level of competition at this point.”

Wildcat runners an unknown quantity

Unlike recent years, Humboldt’s varsity girl-boy Cross Country teams are not clear-cut favorites to win North Central Conference titles this fall.

Veteran Humboldt head coach Dean Clasen and his squad are not backing down, however, and feel they have a good chance to challenge for NCC supremacy this fall.

The Wildcat boys return three letterwinners from last year’s NCC title team while the girls return eight from last year’s team that took fourth in a close final finish.
