Members of the Stantec Consultants study team met with the Humboldt County Conservation Board and four members of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors via Zoom on Aug. 18, to discuss the improvement project for the Joe Reasoner Dam and environs in Humboldt.
Fernando Del Monte, lead engineer, Mimi Wagner, landscape architect and low-head dam specialist, and Cody Fleece, river eco systems specialist, were part of the meeting representing Stantec. Conservation Board members Bob Rasmussen, Bob Moser, TC Loving, Mary Miner and Tate Satern were in attendance either in person or remotely, as were County Supervisors Rick Pedersen, Dave Lee, Sandy Loney and Bruce Reimers. Humboldt County Conservation Director Todd Lee was also in attendance.
The alternatives being considered are full dam rehabilitation, a lowering of the dam crest and water improvements, or total removal of the dam.

2021 challenges Humboldt County bean growers

“Soybeans are a tough crop to raise in this area,” said Cory Donahe, regional agronomy supervisor with the Gold-Eagle Cooperative.
Different soil types, soil Ph issues, weed pressures, pests and soil diseases are all variables that make growing a good bean crop a challenge for even the most diligent agriculturists.
“Beans are a tough one to predict and they are an unknown yield until you get them through the combine. They can be tall and look great and not yield and they can be short and look like crap and blow your mind at harvest, so you never know,” Cory said.
“Fifty bushel beans in central Humboldt County is a pretty good yield,” Donahe said.
Read more about the local crop, the outlook and what is being done to promote soybeans and increase demand in this week's Humboldt Independent in the Salute to Soybean Farmers special section.

Partnerships key in Goedken’s run as CA

The Kiddie Cats Child Care and Learning Center which opened in June of 2018, has been one of the community accomplishments during City Administrator Travis Goedken's time in Humboldt. Read about it and others in this week's edition. Humboldt Independent file photo.

Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken sat in on his final city council meeting on Tuesday. Goedken will be leaving to assume a similar position with the city of Decorah. Humboldt Independent file photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
If you don’t think a lot has happened in the city of Humboldt during the past five years, look around.
Better yet, ask Humboldt City Administrator Travis Goedken. Goedken will be ending his five-year and 8-month tenure as the city’s administrator today (Thursday).
Goedken will be leaving to join wife, Tara, and four children in their new home in Decorah (population 7,701), where Goedken will serve as the town’s city manager.
In just over five years, Humboldt has seen construction of a new child care and learning center, a large multi-use recreation complex, a downtown streetscape redesign, a $16 million hospital and clinic addition, and growth!
