Humboldt rolls past Cardinals in home opener, 41-14

Caden Matson threw four touchdown passes to lead the Humboldt football team to a 41-14 victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals Friday night (Sept. 3) in Humboldt in a non-district home opener at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt.

Lance Coon scored on a 23-yard run and Carson Berte scooped up a fumble and returned 56 yards for a Wildcat touchdown. Trever Beach kicked five extra points for Humboldt, which moved to 2-0 on the season. GHV slipped to 0-2.

Matson connected with teammate Will Orness on three scoring passes covering 19, seven and 38 yards. Matson also teammated up with Jacob Heier on a 29-yard scoring pass.

Humboldt will host Estherville-Lincoln Central on Sept. 10. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

Humboldt wins NCC All Sports title for 10th straight year

For the 10th straight year, Humboldt is the winner of the North Central Conference All Sports points race.

Humboldt activities director Greg Thomas made the announcement last week.

Based on its placing in the conference standings in league competition, Humboldt totaled 74.5 points. Clear Lake was second at 64, followed by Webster City at 63, Iowa Falls-Alden (54), Algona (52.5), Fort Dodge St. Edmond (43), Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (41) and Hampton-Dumont-CAL at 37.

“Congratulations to all our athletes and coaches in earning the North Central Conference sports all points race for the 10th year in a row,” Thomas said.

Humboldt sweeps Cadets in NCC volleyball opener

The Humboldt volleyball team swept the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in a North Central Conference opener in Iowa Falls Thursday night to move to 6-2 overall on the season.

Humboldt won by scores of 25-4, 25-22 and 25-19.

Next action for the Wildcats will be at home on Sept 7 against Storm Lake and Manson-NW.

Rolfe man dies in tractor accident

A Rolfe man has died from injuries sustained in a tractor accident at his farm.
On Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 3:52 p.m., the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a farm tractor accident with a serious injury located at 26475 440th St., northwest of Rolfe. The farm is located on a diagonal between Plover and Rolfe.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they determined that LeRoy L. Simonson, 83, of Rolfe, had been operating his tractor when an attachment to the loader came apart. The tractor ran over the attachment causing Simonson to be ejected from the tractor. Simonson subsequently went under one of the rear wheels of the tractor.
He was later pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pocahontas County Medical Examiner.
The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Rolfe Ambulance and the Rolfe Fire Department.

Get ready for Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Sumner Sept. 9


The 16th annual Cy-Hawk Golf Tournament was held Saturday at Humboldt Country Club with the Hawks narrowly prevailing. Over the 16 years, the series is now tied at 8-8. The tournament draws a field of 68 golfers and starts with a two-person best shot, followed by a two-person alternating shot round and ending with individual match play. The Cy-Hawk golf tournament serves as a fundraiser for the golf course and was a kickoff to the upcoming activities in town on Sept. 9. Humboldt Independent photo by Jeff Gargano.

RVTV will be returning to Humboldt’s Sumner Avenue for the annual Cy-Hawk Rivalry on Thursday, Sept. 9. The event will be held from 4-11 p.m. in downtown Humboldt.
The Humboldt Athletic Booster Club is heading up the event as a fundraiser for Humboldt Athletics.
WHO-TV Channel 13 and their RVTV crew will be coming to Humboldt for the Cy-Hawk Rivalry. Plans are in the works to welcome RVTV as they come into Humboldt on Highway 169 around 11 a.m. on Sept. 9.
