Dam meeting is Feb. 16

The public is invited to attend a meeting about the future of the Reasoner Dam and the West Branch of the Des Moines River in the city of Humboldt.
The meeting is planned for Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Conservation shop building 407 2nd Ave. North in Dakota City.
The Humboldt County Supervisors will join the Humboldt County Conservation Board in attendance. Humboldt City Council members have also been extended an invitation.
On Monday, new Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann said he would have some type of analysis and possible city assistance in funding available for the Council’s review by the end of this week.
At its Jan. 19 meeting, the Humboldt County Conservation Board chose Option/Alternative 2, which would lower the dam by 7.5 feet and create a rock ramp structure around the revised structure, promising more pedestrian access, safer fishing locales and more kayak/tubing and canoeing options.

Supervisors buy two motor graders


On Monday, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors agreed to purchase two Caterpillar motor graders from next year's budget at a cost of $643,478. It will be nearly a year before the new graders are delivered.

While the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors are in the midst of setting the budget for the next fiscal year, the Board on Monday did agree to a purchase for equipment that will be delivered 10-12 months from now.
The Board agreed to purchase two motor graders for Humboldt County Secondary Roads, upon the recommendation of Humboldt County Engineer Ben Loots.
After some discussion, the Board unanimously agreed to purchase two 140 all-wheel drive 2022 Caterpillar motor graders for a total cost of $643,478, including trade-in of old machines from Ziegler CAT of Fort Dodge. The figure was incorrectly reported in the Feb. 10 edition of the Independent. The new machines will be delivered to the county within 10-12 months.

Humboldt girls host LeMars in 4A Region 1 opener Feb. 16

The Humboldt girls basketball team will host LeMars in a Class 4A Region 1 tournament opener on Feb. 16, 7 p.m. in the Wildcat gym.

The winner will travel to Sioux City Heelan on Saturday, Feb. 19, to face Bishop Heelan at 7 p.m. in a regional semifinal. The other half of the bracket has Gilbert hosting Storm Lake on Feb. 16 with the winner meeting Spencer at Spencer on Feb. 19. The regional final will be Feb. 22 at a site to be determined. The highest seeded remaining team will host the regional final.

Humboldt boys host 3A 1st round basketball games

The Humboldt boys basketball team will host Sioux Center in a Class 3A first round post-season tournament game on Monday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m.

The winner of the contest will face LeMars or Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Thursday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m. in Humboldt.

The other half of the substate one bracket has Spencer meeting Algona and Storm Lake facing MOC-Floyd Valley, with a substate semifinal in Spencer on Feb. 24.

Winners of the second round games will play in a substate final on Monday, Feb. 28, 7 p.m. at a site to be determined, for a trip to the state tournament in Des Moines.

The boys state tournament will be played March 7-11 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Humboldt wrestlers fall in regional dual

The Humboldt wrestling team ended their season Tuesday night in a Class 2A regional dual at Sergeant.

Humboldt beat Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, 51-16 in the first round and lost 51-18 to No. 4 ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton afterwards for a berth in the state tournament in Des Moines on Feb. 16.

Humboldt finishes its stellar season at 17-4 overall in duals. Humboldt will now focus on its eight individual wrestlers who will compete in a district tournament at Huxley on Saturday, Feb. 12. The top two place winners at each weight class advance to the state tournament in Des Moines Feb. 17-20.

Wildcat boys dominate Cadets, clinch NCC title

The No. 2 ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt boys' basketball team clinched a share of the North Central Conference title Tuesday night (Feb. 8) by dominating Iowa Falls-Alden, 55-29 in a league matchup with the Cadets.

Humboldt made nine 3-pointers on the night and were led in scoring by Trevor Jacobson with 12 points. Caden Matson and Will Orness each had 10.

Humboldt is 17-1 overall, 12-1 and alone in first in the NCC standings.

Humboldt closes out its conference portion of its schedule on Friday, Feb. 11, when the Wildcats visit the Webster City Lynx.

Big 2nd half lifts Humboldt girls, 71-37 over Iowa Falls Alden

The Humboldt girls basketball team used a big second half to cap their regular season Tuesday night (Feb. 8) in a 71-37 victory at Iowa Falls in North Central Conference action with the Cadets. Humboldt led just 21-18 at halftime but blew the game open in the second half.

Humboldt is 12-9 overall, 9-5 and third in the NCC standings.

The Wildcats begin Class 4A regional tournament play next week. Pairings are expected to be announced this week.

Police determine unattended death accidental

On Saturday, Feb. 5, at 07:34 a.m., the Humboldt Police Department, and Humboldt Ambulance responded to 10 Rainbow Dr. for an unresponsive 44-year-old female lying on the residential driveway.
First responders discovered the individual was deceased. The initial investigation provided no indication of foul-play, and the death appeared to be accidental, according to Humboldt Police Chief Joel Sanders.
The name of the deceased has not been released. Humboldt County Medical Examiner, Mike Sexe said he confirmed the death at the scene Saturday morning. “The cause of death is pending an autopsy,” Sexe said. The autopsy is planned for Tuesday, Feb. 8.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to call the Law Enforcement Center at (515) 332-2600.

Wrestlers win team title, advance 8 to district meet

The Humboldt wrestling team won the Class 2A sectional tournament title and advanced 8 individuals into the Feb. 12 district at Huxley.

Placing first for Humboldt was Jayden Gargano at 126 pounds, Dusty Pate at 132 and Joe Weydert at 152. Runner-up finishers include Cyler Cirks at 106, Owen Mayall at 113, David Muir at 120, Jase Goodell at 138 and Ty Gargano at 145.

The Wildcats finished with 225 points. Ballard Huxley had 207 and Roland- Story 203. Southeast Valley followed with 187, Gilbert 112 and Nevada 68.

Humboldt advanced into a regional dual on Tuesday, Feb.8 at Sergeant Bluff. Humboldt will face Boyden Hull/ Rock Valley in the first round.

District action begins at 11a.m. on Saturday.
