Humboldt High all-state football standout Caden Matson, who was one of the state’s leaders in all-purpose yards and led the Wildcats to a 13-1 record and the state semifinals, was named Player of the Year in Class 3A by the Iowa Football Coaches Association.

The announcement came last week. Matson, a multi-sport standout in track, baseball and basketball, will play in the North-South Shrine Bowl All-Star game in July before heading off to Iowa State University, where he will be an invited walk-on for the Cyclone football team.

“It’s a huge honor that I am extremely thankful to have even been considered for,” Matson said. “Just knowing that coaches across the state see me in that way is an honor itself.”

The fleet-footed Matson who was equally explosive with his passing arm, became the starting quarterback late in his sophomore season and never gave up those duties as he led Humboldt to the district title in 2021. Matson was a two-time all-state pick in 3A.

Superintendent outlines new facilities

A total of 485 students from Humboldt Middle School and St. Mary's School helped package more than 88,000 meals for hungry people in need on Friday, March 18, part of the Humboldt County Meals from the Heartland meal raising effort which packaged 215,352 meals. Humboldt Independent photo.

By Phil Monson
Superintendent Jim Murray reported on architect progress for the proposed facilities work planned at Taft Elementary, the middle school and the high school. He said final plans are expected to be ready for the board’s approval in May, to begin the bidding process this summer with groundbreaking to take place this fall and work completed by the 2023-24 school year.
“Terry Allers of Allers Architects in Fort Dodge has sketches done for Taft, as well as at the high school and middle school. The additional classroom space at the middle school will have to be added onto the south end, which will require the playground to be moved a little bit further south, to take advantage of level ground,” Murray said.
“The gym at Taft will be a steel building but we’ll try to match it with the rest of the Taft building,” Murray said.

After a six-year absence, Don Thul re-opened West River Meats in Rutland in mid-December.
Fire destroyed the meat locker on Feb. 22, 2015. Thul vowed to be back and made good on his promise. In between he operated a restaurant at Algona Country Club.
For the new meat locker, Thul added onto an existing 24’ by 40’ building that had housed his catering business. The 60’ by 40’ addition was started in the fall of 2020. Material and machinery delays kept the locker from opening until December of 2021.
