Funds and volunteers needed for new playground

The current Wildcat Wonderland has certainly gotten a lot of good use over the past 32 years. Children at Taft School use the playground every day during the school year. When the playground was constructed in 1990, more than 2,000 volunteers participated. Humboldt Independent photo by Kent Thompson.

School, city and community leaders were excited early this year to announce that a new Wildcat Wonderland Playground will be built in Taft Park later this year.
Now it is time to put together needed fundraising and enlist volunteers and project leaders who can complete the volunteer build, which is scheduled for Aug. 16-21.
Early this winter, the Humboldt County Community Foundation (HCCF) announced its first ever matching challenge grant as part of the fundraising effort. The Community Foundation agreed to offer a $50,000 challenge grant match, matching the first $50,000 raised, dollar-for-dollar.
“We are still about $11,000 short of getting to that goal,” HCCF President Alissa O’Connor reported recently. Letters have been sent out to local businesses and organizations.
