Wildcat girls win softball opener

It was a successful debut for first-year Humboldt head softball coach Katie Schuelke Monday night (May 23) as her Wildcats defeated Southeast Valley, 17-7 in a non-conference game in Humboldt.

Humboldt pitcher Reagan Lee scattered eight hits over five innings to lead the Wildcats. Alexis Hansen went 3-for-3 at bat with a double and homer. Paige Opheim went 4-for-4 with a homer.

Humboldt will visit Fort Dodge St. Edmond on Wednesday, May 25, in a North Central Conference opener with the Gaels.

Wildcat boys edge Lynx in substate soccer, 1-0

Humboldt's unbeaten and No. 1 ranked boys' soccer team held off a determined Webster City Lynx squad Monday night, 1-0 in a semifinal round contest in Humboldt.

Nolan Gustafson scored the game's only goal on a free kick three minutes into the second half to lift Humboldt, which improved to 16-0 overall.

The Wildcats will host Perry on Wednesday, May 25, in a substate final for the right to advance to the state tournament in Des Moines on June 1-4. Perry defeated Storm Lake, 2-0.
