Humboldt Parks Director Clayton Vorland was very tired but satisfied when the rains came last Friday afternoon.
After a full week of lifting and setting, sawing and screwing, sweating and fretting, the new rendition of the Wildcat Wonderland Playground was completed.
Well, almost. If people are wondering about the piles of material around the outside of the playground, Vorland is waiting for the poured-in-place surfacing to be laid around the playground piece structures.
The Parks Director reported the number of volunteers participating in the playground build was around 400 people.

The Humboldt Athletic Booster Club received a donation of $50,000 from First State Bank in Humboldt for the construction of the new athletic training complex at Humboldt High School.
Jim Murray, superintendent of Humboldt schools, accepted the donation on behalf of the district last week from bank staff.
“It’s just another great example of how community members support our school. We are so fortunate here in Humboldt to have First State Bank step up and donate towards our multi-purpose building and athletic complex,” Murray said.
“It’s really exciting because it will make us future ready and attract students who come into the communities and provide great facilities for years to come,” Murray said. “I’m really grateful to the team here at First State Bank.”

Livermore man killed in single-vehicle crash

A Livermore man is dead after his vehicle left the road and rolled several times in rural Kossuth County, north of Livermore Monday night, Aug. 22.

Humboldt volleyball coach Kara Waldorf and her squad set the bar pretty high in her first year as head coach of the Wildcats last year.
Humboldt posted a perfect North Central Conference match record of 7-0. And for the first time in conference history dating back to the late 1970s, the Wildcats were the only school to sweep all of their opponents 3-0 in each match.
But one loss in last year’s 29-7 campaign serves as a motivator…a 3-0 loss to Waverly-Shell Rock in a Class 4A regional final.
“Last year we started the year with an entirely new team on the floor and they did a wonderful job of stepping up. That one year of experience under their belts now will help tremendously going into this season,” Waldorf said.

Last year the Humboldt football team ran the table in Class 3A District 2 and went unbeaten during the regular season before suffering their first loss in the state playoffs to finish 11-1.
After graduating a talented 19-member senior class, some outsiders may not expect much from the Wildcats, and that’s fine with head coach Derrick Elman, who begins his fifth year leading the Wildcats.
“A year ago going into the new season, we felt like we could be pretty good. A testament to the kids that they really put it on and made it a special and memorable season,” Elman said.
“They did some things that haven’t happened here in a long time. We took that experience with our underclassmen going into the off-season and worked hard and let them know constantly that big things happen when you have big dreams and work really, really hard,” Elman said.
