HHS girls 7th, boys 11th in Algona cross country

Led by freshman standouts Brynn Malo and Gabe Thumma, Humboldt's varsity cross country teams competed in the Algona Invitational on Monday, Sept. 26.

The Wildcat girls were seventh in the team scoring while the boys were 11th.

Malo finished sixth in 20:16. Alana Malo was 48th and Meg Zweibohmer 57th for the Wildcats.

Thumma was 22nd in 18:26. Jaden Nimrod ran 74th, Austin Little was 75th and Hayden Hansen 76th.

Next action for the Wildcats will be the Dick Bell Invitational at Eagle Grove on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Wildcat girls go 5-0 to win Spencer tournament

Humboldt went 5-0 on the day to win the Spencer Invitational volleyball tournament last Saturday, Sept. 24.

Humboldt won each match in a 2-0 sweep. They downed West Lyon, Mason City, LeMars, Central Lyon and Spencer to improve to 13-8 overall on the season.

Humboldt hosts Fort Dodge St. Edmond on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

Humboldt man killed, two others injured

One Humboldt man is dead and two others received injuries as a result of a single-vehicle accident that occurred early Monday morning, Sept. 26, in the 1100 block of Birch Avenue, about 2-1/2 miles southwest of Ottosen.
According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), dispatch received a report of a single-vehicle accident on Birch Avenue. The accident was reported at 6:36 a.m.
An investigation at the scene determined that a 2005 Buick LeSabre was northbound on Birch Avenue when it failed to navigate a slight curve to the west and entered the east ditch. The vehicle struck a culvert, went airborne and landed in a cornfield. The vehicle flipped and rolled before coming to rest on its wheels in the field.

Humboldt football team rallies past Ballard in district opener, 26-14

The top-ranked Humboldt football team rallied from a brief second-half deficit to upend Ballard-Huxley, 26-14 in a Class 3A District 2 contest at Huxley Friday night, Sept. 23.

Humboldt junior running back Lance Coon rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats, who improved to 5-0 overall, 1-0 in district play.

Quarterback Will Orness scored on a rushing play and also passed eight yards to Trever Beach for a score as Humboldt overcame the wet conditions.

Michael Illg led the Humboldt defense with three solo tackles and eight assists. Owen Hubbell was in on two solos and eight assists. Hunter Dery also had one solo and eight assists. Tayeton Lohaus had two sacks.

The Wildcats will return home to host North Polk in a key district clash on Friday, Sept. 30, at Mason Maach Field in Humboldt. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Wildcat girls sweep Bulldogs in 3 sets

Humboldt's varsity volleyball team moved its North Central Conference record to 3-1 by sweeping Hampton-Dumont-CAL in three sets on Sept. 22 in Hampton.

The Wildcats won by scores of 25-11, 25-14 and 25-8 to improve to 8-8 overall in matches. Six-foot sophomore Larsen Bonnstetter led the Wildcats with 12 kills on 15 attempts with only two errors.

Humboldt competes in the Spencer tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The Wildcats host Fort Dodge St. Edmond on Sept. 27 in NCC action.
