Sande Construction donates $5,000 to food pantry

Sande Construction and Supply of Humboldt provided a generous donation of $5,000 in food items to the Humboldt County Food Pantry last week. They are putting out a challenge that if another local business or industry will donate $7,500, Sande will donate another $5,000 to keep shelves stocked through the winter months. Sande Construction and Supply Co. of Humboldt made a generous donation of $5,000 in foodstuffs to The Humboldt County Food Pantry last week. While five vehicles full of food looks massive in the photo, the amount is only about enough to last two months.
“The generosity is overwhelming but so is the need,” Ministerial Association Board member and Humboldt County Development Director Alissa O’Connor said.
Tonya Heier, Jamie DeWinter and Sarah Dieleman delivered the goods on behalf of the company. They purchased $2,500 from Fareway and $2,500 from Hy-Vee and donated it to the food pantry.
Because the need is great, Sande Construction is offering a challenge. If another business would be willing to make a $7,500 donation in groceries to the food pantry, Sande will double its donation and contribute another $5,000.

The planned Veterans Memorial for Worthington Park received a needed shot in the arm recently with an $11,000 donation from MidAmerican Energy.
“We will be starting the sidewalk around the outside next spring and then purchasing the pavers and getting those sandblasted with the information,” Daryle Zwiefel of Humboldt, a Vietnam era veteran and organizer of the project, said.
The MidAmerican donation came about through a drawing for non-profit groups at the Iowa State Fair through the MidAmerican Energy CARES, a corporate citizenship effort through the utility company. Fifth-generation pork producer finds niche

Phil Kramer poses with a couple of pregnant gilts soon to give birth. Kramer has a 65-head sow herd and markets about 1,100 pigs per year. His current breeding mix is Chester White/Duroc, but Phil is a member of the Hereford Hog Hall of Fame. Humboldt Independent photo by Kent Thompson.

Humboldt’s Phil Kramer is proud to be a fifth-generation pig farmer. That’s a claim not many pork producers can make these days.
Phil’s great-great grandfather, Isadore Kramer, raised pigs, as did his great grandfather, grandfather and father.
It could be said that animal husbandry and raising high-quality pork is in Phil Kramer’s blood.
His father, Martin Kramer, farms near Algona and raised farrow-to-finish hogs from 1975 to 2017. He was named an Iowa Master Pork Producer in 2007.
Read about Phil's farrow-to-finish pig operation in this week's Salute to Pork Producers in the Humboldt Independent. Subscribe by clicking on the link at the top of this page.
