Johnson turns the page, Larsen is next director

Demi Johnson’s passion for reading became a career she wasn’t expecting but one she has thoroughly enjoyed.
“It’s been incredible. It’s been the best part of my life,” she said.
Johnson, the Humboldt Public Library director, is putting a bookend on her nearly 22-year library career, including the past eight as the city’s public library director.

Tree walk and special program at Historical Museum


A postcard of area towns adorns the historical museum tree at the Hardy Church at the Humboldt County Historical Museum in Dakota City. The tree walk in the church will be this Friday and Sunday evenings, Dec. 16 and 18, from 5-8 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 17, there will be special programs at the Millhouse and church from 1-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Humboldt Independent photo.

The Humboldt County Historical Museum will be having a Christmas tree walk in the historic Hardy Church on the museum grounds.
The tree walk will be the following dates and times:
Friday, Dec. 16, 5-8 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 18, 5-8 p.m.
Admission is a freewill donation.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, the Museum will be hosting a Christmas Open House under the theme “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The event will take place on Dec. 17 from 1-4 p.m. and from 5-8 p.m.
“We are hoping to have sleigh rides between the Millhouse and Historic Hardy Church, There will be Christmas goodies and refreshments in the church basement and fun activities for all ages to enjoy,” Museum Executive Director Erica Knudson said.
Santa Claus will be the Museum’s special guest that day. There will be a reading of “The Night Before Christmas,” at 2 p.m. in the Millhouse Ballroom. Admission is a freewill donation.

Impressive comeback! HHS boys rally past Algona, 83-63

Humboldt's varsity boys' basketball team rallied from 10 points down midway through the third quarter and rolled past Algona, 83-63 in a key North Central Conference game in the Humboldt gym on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Josh Thurm scored 20 points to lead five Wildcats in double figure scoring. Elliot Carlson made 17, Evan Hatcher and Corey Dettmann each had 15 and Will Orness finished with 12 for Humboldt, now 3-0 overall, 2-0 in the NCC.

Ben Helmers scored 19 points to lead Algona. Caden Weber had 15 and Simon Feucht added 13 for the Bulldogs.

Humboldt is ranked No. 10 in this week's Associated Press Class 3A rankings.

Humboldt visits Hampton on Friday, Dec. 16. The Wildcats' non-conference home game with Fort Dodge on Dec. 15 has been postponed due to inclement weather.

Humboldt upended by Algona, 55-40

The Humboldt girls' basketball team lost 55-40 at home to the Algona Bulldogs in a North Central Conference game in the Humboldt gym on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Morgan Mann scored 14 points to lead Humboldt in scoring. Kayla Gieber added nine points and Bella Opheim and Ava Fischer each had 7. A’Lailah Perry and Lauren McLaughlin each had 14 to lead Algona. Casey Van Otterloo made 12 and Lillian Etherington had 11.

The Wildcats are 2-3 overall, 2-1 in the NCC.

The Wildcats visit Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Dec. 16. Humboldt's non-conference home game with Fort Dodge on Dec. 15 has been postponed due to inclement weather.

Wildcat girls have 3 champs at Algona

McMahon, Beaman, Robinson win titles for Humboldt

Humboldt’s girls crowned three individual champions and had other numerous high finishes at the Martin Invitational wrestling tournament in Algona on Dec. 9.

Humboldt got titles from Mackenzie McMahon at 130-135, Kali Beaman at 155 and Brooklyn Robinson at 235.

Taking second for the Wildcats was Dylan Saathoff, Elsie Hubbell, Mia Harris, Claire Weydert, Lexi Roberts, Sophia Harris and Macey Varangkounh.

Humboldt wrestlers 2nd at Central Decatur

The Humboldt wrestling team placed runner-up in the team scoring of the Central Decatur Dan Christensen Tournament on Friday, Dec. 9.

Placing first for Humboldt was Cyler Cirks at 113, Jayden Gargano at 132 and Jase Goodell at 152. Tyce Clarken was second at 120, along with Ty Gargano at 160.

Mid-Buchanan edged Humboldt for the team title.

The Wildcats are at Hampton on Dec. 15.

Humboldt's girls evened their season record at 2-2 Friday night (Dec. 9) by blasting Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 75-24 in a North Central Conference game in the Humboldt gym.

Morgan Mann scored 24 points, Ava Fischer had 19 and Kaitlyn Nelson made 10 for Humboldt, now 2-0 in the NCC. Anna Lursen scored 13 points to lead St. Edmond.

Humboldt will host Algona in an NCC game on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Humboldt raced out to an early lead and never let up in dominating Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 93-50 in a boys North Central Conference game in the Humboldt gym Friday night, Dec. 9.

Evan Hatcher scored 23 points, Josh Thurm made 21, Will Orness scored 13 and Elliot Carlson had 12 to power Humboldt, which improved to 2-0 overall, 1-0 in the NCC. Sam Mericle paced St. Edmond with 18 points. Jackson Palmer had 13 and Elias Kolacia 10.

Humboldt made 17 3-pointers on the night, including 4 each by Hatcher, Thurm and Carlson. Humboldt led 61-31 at halftime.

The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 13, when they host Algona.
