Three lanes or four for 10th Avenue North?

Should Humboldt switch from a four-lane road on 10th Avenue North by Hy-Vee to a three-lane road? The city council is debating the matter and will collect more information. Humboldt Independent photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
Should 10th Avenue North (Highway 3) between 13th Street North and 5th Street North be four-lane or three-lane? That was the question that garnered a lot of debate among a full complement of Humboldt City Council members at their bi-monthly meeting on Monday night.
The five Council members: Kirk Whittlesey, John Sleiter, Joel Goodell, Jeff Harklau and Matt Dominick had varying viewpoints on such a move and there was no consensus on whether such an action would be beneficial, outside of from a safety standpoint. It was generally agreed that a three-lane road would be safer, slowing down traffic and eliminating blind spots when turning onto the highway from north and south side streets.
The Council reached no decision but may visit the issue again. Read about their thoughts on the matter in this week's Humboldt Independent, your trusted source for local news and sports.

For Jon Sampson, conservation is a practical decision

Jon Sampson, who farms in Corinth Township, southwest of Humboldt, was named the 2022 Conservation Farmer of the Year by the Humboldt County Soil and Water Conservation District. Humboldt Independent photo by Jim Sayers.

By JIM SAYERS
Jon Sampson farms in Corinth Township southwest of Humboldt where his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents farmed before him; it is now a fourth-generation farm. “Farming is all I ever wanted to do,” he said.
Sampson received the 2022 Humboldt County Conservation Farmer of the Year award by the Humboldt County Soil and Water Conservation District.
While Sampson lists a number of benefits from implementing conservation practices including no-till and cover crops on his 200-acre-plus farm, he said the most important thing to him is “timing.”
“Because I work in town full-time, my time is very valuable. (Due to conservation farming,) I save time in the fall by not chopping stalks or chisel plowing. In the spring, I don’t have to take time tilling before planting. All I have to worry about is planting, spraying and combining."

Supervisors approve selected county roads for permitted overweight hauling

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors have approved approximately 143 miles of county paving for overweight permitted loads for truckers who buy a year-long permit. Under the state rules, the trucks could carry an additional 12 percent per axle. Submitted photo.

By KENT THOMPSON
The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors have signed off on approved routes for overweight permitting of commercial and farm vehicles.
The overwhelming majority of the loads will be for the hauling of grain and ethanol, to and from farms and elevator depots and ethanol plants, but it could also include the hauling of implements, vehicles and other heavy machinery on trailers.
The permits are good for one year for any approved roads across the state. The cost is $500 per vehicle with $375 returning to the counties for road upkeep.
In addition to the state and federal highways in the county, the Supervisors approved approximately 143 miles of county roads at its Feb. 27 meeting.
Read more about it and see the map in this week's Humboldt Independent.

Stover helps in all areas but mostly focused on wheelchair events for the last three years with Caperon.

“I just like giving back to the kids. I learned so much and I was able to get so much out of running that I want to continue giving back to the kids and guys that probably were a lot like I was when I was in high school and in college,” Stover said.

“Just the things that I was able to accomplish, especially in college, I never would have dreamed I could have done that when I was a young kid growing up. It shows you what hard work and dedication can get you,” Stover said.

O’Hern named Activities Director at Humboldt

Ryan O'Hern

By PHIL MONSON

Ryan O’Hern is looking forward to returning to north central Iowa.

O’Hern, an Eagle Grove native and currently teaching and coaching in the West Burlington School District in southeast Iowa, will begin his duties here on July 1. He’ll replace Greg Thomas, who is stepping down from his position at the end of the school year.

“I am humbled, appreciative and thankful for the opportunity to take over as the next Humboldt activities director. I know there will be big holes to fill with Greg Thomas retiring,” O’Hern told the Independent in an interview on Feb. 21. His hiring was approved by the Humboldt Board of Education in their Feb. 20 meeting.
