Humboldt advances 14 events to state Special Olympics

Humboldt will send 14 events into next month’s Special Olympics State Track and Field Championships after competing in a qualifying meet last Friday, April 21 in Fort Dodge.

First-place finishers in last week’s meet qualify for the state meet to be held in Ames.

For Humboldt, Stephanie Boyd advanced in the shot put competition. Adam Duffy also qualified for state in the shot put. Jacob Heginger advances in the javelin throw.

Jon Nelson earned first-place in both the 100-meters and the shot put. In the 25-meter walk, Kysen Nostrom was first. Zachary Pate earned first in the shot put.

Cami Pederson was also a double winner, taking the 100-meters and javelin throw competition. In the shot put, Zujeiry Venegas was first in her division.

Andrew Winter and Justin Wurn were both double winners. Winter won the 200-meters and mini javelin events. Wurn won the 100-meters and mini javelin events.

Humboldt boys edge Lions in key NCC golf meet

Humboldt’s varsity boys’ golf team took one step toward winning the North Central Conference dual title by edging Clear Lake and Algona in a key triangular meet at Humboldt Country Club on April 25.

The Wildcats and the Lions both finished with 166 strokes but Humboldt won via the tie-breaker as the Wildcats’ fifth-best score of 43 was one lower than the 44 by the Lions’ number five golfer. Algona finished with 187.

Senior Jayden Gargano fired a 40 to pace Humboldt. He was backed by Carson Arndt with 41 and Carson Sleiter at 42. Ty Gargano and Parker Sleiter each shot a 43 and Corey Dettmann fired a 45.

Humboldt moved to 5-0 in conference dual play by beating Iowa Falls-Alden in Humboldt on April 28. Corey Dettmann shot a 38 and Carson Sleiter had a 39 to lead Humboldt, which totaled 157 strokes. IFA shot 186 and was led by Cal Kalous with 41.

Humboldt visits Webster City on May 2 for an NCC triangular which includes Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

Beach signs with Northwestern College


Humboldt High senior Trever Beach will attend Northwestern College in Orange City next fall and play football for the Red Raiders. He signed a letter of intent last week to play for the NAIA school. Trever Beach, one of the top placekickers in the state last fall, will take his talents to Northwestern College at Orange City in the fall.

Beach, a Humboldt High School senior, signed a letter of intent last week to cement his commitment to the Red Raiders. Northwestern head coach Matt McCarty was on hand to sign Beach.

“I’m pretty excited to go to the next level and play football. It’s a little nervous, but I’m excited to go out and play again,” Beach said. “I felt right at home at Northwestern.”

Wildcat girls reign supreme, win Humboldt Relays track title

Humboldt won five events and ran away with the team title in their own Wildcat Relays held Monday night, April 24 in Humboldt.

The Wildcats finished with 155.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up Estherville-LC which had 116. Algona was third at 98.5 and Pocahontas Area had 92.

Humboldt freshman Brynn Malo won the 1,500-meters in 5:30.0 and also clocked 12:06.5 to win the 3,000-meters.

Humboldt’s 800-meter medley relay won with a time of 1:56.6. Tayla Wempen, Kate Sievers, Bella Metli and Morgan Mann comprised the winning relay for the Wildcats.

Morgan Mann won the high jump with a leap of 4-10. Tayla Wempen won the long jump with an effort measuring 15-7.

Humboldt competes in the Storm Lake Relays on April 27. The North Central Conference meet will be held on May 4 at Fort Dodge.
