HCMH celebrates Mental Health Center opening

HCMH officials cut the ribbon on the new Mental Health and Wellness Center on the hospital campus. The center officially opened on Monday.

By PHIL MONSON
It was a week past Good Friday, but Friday, April 14 was definitely good for the Humboldt area and its residents.
Humboldt County Memorial Hospital (HCMH) opened its Mental Health & Wellness Center. The 3,000-square foot building sandwiched between the HCMH surgical center and Springvale Assisted Living will provide mental health counseling, therapy and services for adults and children of all ages.
“The day has finally arrived where we can serve the mental health needs of more and more (people) in our area,” HCMH Chief Executive Officer Michelle Sleiter exclaimed at last Friday’s ribbon cutting and open house of the new $1.66 million facility.

High school office addition project approved by board

By PHIL MONSON
Construction work on the Humboldt High School office addition will begin next month after action by the Humboldt School Board Monday night, April 17.
The board approved a bid of $1,967,850 from Sande Construction Company of Humboldt to add on to the north entrance and create new office space in addition to creating an updated, secure entrance into the building. Jensen Construction of Fort Dodge submitted the higher bid of $2,575,000.
The new entrance will feature a hallway that will allow the public to enter the building to attend sporting events at night while the offices will be locked.
“Cost-wise it makes sense to bring the wall out to meet the corners of the building on each side so it will be even all the way across,” Humboldt School Superintendent Jim Murray said.
“By adding this front office project, we may create space at the high school that could get re-purposed for a classroom area,” Murray said.

Out of necessity comes imagination

When the Coronavirus hit the United States in March of 2020, many businesses shut down, with non-essential employees being asked to stay home. While it was a scary time, many people vowed to use this time for a little self-improvement. Angie and David Cravens took that self-improvement to a whole new level and started a thriving business, Sissy Creations, now located on main street in Humboldt (619 Sumner Ave.).
“The building we are in now was for sale, but we thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask about it to see if it they might rent it,” David stated.
The owners, Bret and Deb Davis, met with the couple and agreed that they would rent the space to them. By October 1st the couple had moved in and opened the current store, Sissy Creations.
“It was a wonderful experience. Bret was very helpful and everyone in the community has been so supportive,” Angie stated.

No traffic sign changes

Doug Marso Excavating of Dakota City removes pieces of debris from the former Lindhares property the city purchased last year. The Humboldt Fire Department conducted a controlled burn of the home and a barn on the property last fall. The city eventually hopes to use the area as a destination location for people utilizing the Des Moines River and the Cottonwood Trail. Humboldt Independent photo by Kent Thompson.

Following a three-month review, the Humboldt City Council on Monday discussed possible stop/yield sign changes in the community, but decided against any official action.
The city street department, police department and city officials reviewed streets.
“We received several requests and questions about stop and yield signs in certain locations in town,” Humboldt City Administrator Cole Bockelmann said.
Three in particular were examined:
• Gotch Park Road/3rd Ave. S./2nd St. S. – Eastbound 3rd Ave. S. approaching 2nd St. S. and Gotch Park Road has a yield sign and westbound has a stop sign. City staff recommends making both directions either stop or yield rather than one of each.
