Students hear about cyber bullying

Humboldt students found out that words can be as hurtful as actions last week during a meeting with Iowa State Trooper Tracy Teague. The subject was cyber bulling. Cyber bullying is something Humboldt school staff deals with on a regular basis. “It’s something we deal with every week,” Humboldt Middle School social worker Brenda McCartan said. In an effort to educate both students and parents about cyber bullying, Trooper Teague of Algona met with Humboldt Middle School and Humboldt High School students last Thursday, and met with parents in the evening. With the advent of cell phones, laptops, computers and other electronic devices, harassment (cyber bullying) has become more prevalent and easier to prove. Trooper Teague explained the laws that pertain to harassment and the definition of harassment under Iowa law is “communicating with the intent to annoy or cause harm.” Bullying is defined as “aggressive physical or psychological behavior that is intended to cause harm or distress.” To read more about this issue purchase a copy of this week's Humboldt Independent.
