Masterworks Concert Review by Nora Carlson
The middle school concert took place on March 3, 2016, at R. Wesley Carlson Auditorium. The concert commenced at seven o’clock. The featured songs were Cluster Fluster Bluster March, New World Symphony, and Beauty and the Beast.
The first was “Cluster Fluster Buster March.” It contained a variety of unique notes and chords. The middle school band did a spectacular job on making sure the melody was heard and was clear. There were some issues on timing and staying together. I think that the best part of this song was the harmony between the trumpets and clarinets.
The next song was “New World Symphony.” There were four movements or sections to this song. The first was on the slower side and reminded you of a thunderstorm in a forest. It could represent the old world going down hill. The second movement was still a little slower but had more of a feeling of a lost horse finding its way home or the old world finding the new world. The third movement was faster and more upbeat as if the new world has been created but not alive yet. Then in the fourth movement, it was very upbeat, and the new world was alive and well. In this song, there were some dynamic errors but other than that and some chords it was a very good song.
The last song played by the middle school band was “Beauty and the Beast.” This was a great song, in my opinion, the best played. It had a mixture of upbeat and slow intertwined with just the perfect amount of each. Each section did a great job of making sure their part was heard but not too loud. This was a tremendous concert! It is a great way to support your Humboldt music department so be sure to attend the Parade of Bands in May!
