The expression built from the ground up would be an apt description for Blacktop Service Company of Humboldt. The local family-owned road construction business is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
The business began in 1967, when brothers Frank and John Wagner and their cousin, Ed Reding, who had been working for asphalt contractors in other states, decided they could do the business for themselves, right here in Humboldt County.
From very humble beginnings 50 years ago, Blacktop Service Company has grown to an asphalt paving, chip sealing, road milling and base work road construction business that employs right at 80 workers, has five asphalt plants and multiple work crews, covering about the western five-eighths of the state of Iowa, from the Minnesota border to the Missouri border. A typical spring through late fall construction season could find Blacktop Service Company working in 130 towns and 45 counties in the state.
