Wildcat girls 1st, boys 2nd in season cross country opener

Humboldt's girls won the team title while the Wildcat boys were runner-up in the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadet Invitational cross country meet on Aug. 24 at Mayne's Grove south of Hampton.

Humboldt's girls totaled 29 points to breeze to first-place. Host IFA was second with 57 points while Eagle Grove was third at 105 in the eight-team field. Bryce Gidel led the Wildcats as she was the overall winner with a time of 19:47.67. Gabby Kent (20:37) ran fifth and Lauren Erickson (21:46) was sixth for Humboldt. Elizabeth Hildreth and Madeleine Ruzicka were eighth and ninth, respectively, for the Wildcats.

Joseph Kunert was second overall in 17:38.28 to pace the Humboldt boys, who totaled 42 points. They were edged by Clear Lake at 38. Mason City Newman was third at 73.

Humboldt also got a fourth-place finish from Quintin Orr at 17:49.86 while Denny Pederson was sixth in 18:13.69.

Humboldt returns to action at Webster City on Tuesday, Aug. 29, in the Lynx Invitational.
