Dirt work is under way and plans are on place for the new Humboldt Recreation Center along Wildcat Road across from Humboldt High School and Middle School.
The Humboldt Recreation Center is being built by the Ken and Marilyn Nielsen family. Upon completion, the Nielsen family will donate the facility to the city of Humboldt.
The 70,000 square foot facility will be called the Humboldt Recreation Center (HRC) and the gym/track area will be named the Ken and Marilyn Nielsen Family Fieldhouse.
Sande Construction of Humboldt is the general contractor on the project, which has a target completion date of Dec. 31, 2018.
The public will have a chance to see the plans for the new Humboldt Recreation Center during the RVTV Cy-Hawk event on Humboldt’s Sumner Avenue on Thursday, Sept. 7. The Nielsen family, city officials and Sande Construction will have a table near the Humboldt-Dakota City Chamber of Commerce office from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for people to see the plans.
The Nielsens are donating the facility, but there are plenty of opportunities for citizens, business and industry to help complete the rec center. New equipment will be needed to outfit the rec center. The goal is to raise $500,000 in contributions. Tax deductible contributions can be sent to Humboldt Recreation Center, PO Box 73, Humboldt, IA 50548. Contributors will be recognized on a wall of donors.
