Humboldt's hopes of winning the North Central Conference cross country championship for the second straight year came up short Tuesday night at Algona – by two points.

The Wildcats finished with 40 team points but Clear Lake was two points better at 38 to take the team crown. Webster City was third at 89.

Humboldt was paced by Joe Kunert, who ran second in 17:02. Teammate Quinton Orr was third at 17:10 and Denny Pederson ran sixth in 17:21. Devon Coon checked in 10th in 18:08.

Humboldt will now set its sights on the state qualifying meet at Spencer on Oct. 19. The top 3 teams and top 15 individuals in the meet will qualify for the state meet in Fort Dodge on Oct. 28.
