Gilmore City native Dana Vote, head wrestling coach at Midland University in Fremont, NE, was recently named Coach of the Year in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
Midland, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, won the conference tournament held in Hastings, NE, on Feb. 17. They scored 137.5 points, surpassing runner-up Northwestern, which was second with 107.5 points. The tournament also served as the North Regional Qualifier for the NAIA National Tournament, set to take place Mar. 2-3 in Des Moines.
Midland had two individual champions and qualified eight wrestlers for the upcoming national tournament. This past season the Warriors compiled a 7-4 won-loss dual record overall, 6-2 and second in the GPAC.
Vote is completing his first season leading the Warriors after serving one year as director of operations at Iowa State University. Over the course of 10 years associated with collegiate wrestling, Vote has coached one National Champion, 11 All-Americans, 32 national qualifiers and 12 Academic All-Americans.
