Groundbreaking is underway on the new addition at Humboldt High School.
In the regular monthly meeting of the Humboldt School Board Monday night (June 18), Humboldt School Superintendent Greg Darling reported Kingland Construction of Forest City began digging on the project earlier in the day.
“We’ve had a couple of little change orders on the project, but nothing drastic,” Humboldt School Superintendent Greg Darling said.
The addition will be on the north side of the school building, east of R. Wesley Carlson Auditorium.
Darling said architectural plans are being finalized for the demolition of the old middle school building. After the new middle school opened in the fall of 2013, the district vacated three quarters of the building but continue to use the west wing and gymnasium.
“Engineers and architects went through the building the other day and are finalizing plans. They will be putting together another detailed drawing on that project,” Darling said.
In other construction news, the Kiddie Cats Daycare in Dakota City is completed and will be open for business beginning next week. An open house is planned on Thursday, June 21 from 4-7 p.m. A new roof is being put on the Mease Elementary School and construction continues on the Taft Elementary School addition, with final completion expected later this summer.
