Humboldt put together another strong effort at home Friday night against the Spencer Tigers, but came up on the short end of a 24-12 final score at Mason Maach Field.

Lucas Volf kicked field goals of 30 and 42 yards, respectively, to aid the Humboldt scoring. The Wildcats also got a 16-yard touchdown pass play from Joey Busse to Jamison Heinz early in the fourth quarter to pull within five at 17-12.

The Wildcats, who trailed just 10-9 at halftime, couldn't catch Spencer in the second half as the Tigers improved to 3-1 on the season. Humboldt slipped to 1-3 overall. The Wildcats, who were 2-1 a week ago after beating Storm Lake, learned this past week they had to forfeit the Storm Lake win after using an ineligible player in the Sept. 7 contest. Humboldt will begin Class 3A District 2 action at home on Friday, Sept. 21, against Boone.
