Humboldt’s varsity Cross Country teams put together an impressive effort Monday night (Sept. 17) despite finishing runner-up to a pair of powerful Gilbert teams.
Running in the Humboldt Invitational at Sheldon Park, the Wildcat boys finished with 51 team points, just 15 behind first-place and No. 1 ranked (Class 3A) Gilbert. Humboldt girls, even without a pair of senior scorers, finished 10 points behind team champ Gilbert.
The Humboldt boys were paced by sophomore Quinton Orr, who was second overall in 17:14. Senior Joe Kunert was third overall for the Wildcats in 17:28. Trey Engen of Algona was the overall winner in 17:06.
Humboldt junior Bryce Gidel kept her regular season first-place win streak alive by taking the individual crown in the girls’ race with a time of 19:34, well ahead of Iowa Falls-Alden’s Aubrie Fisher (20:07). Wildcat senior Elizabeth Hildreth was 10th in 22:25.
“Our varsity girls were without two of our top five scorers and for us to still finish second was really indicative of how our girls ran tonight,” Clasen said, noting seniors Isabella Luu and Lauren Erickson were not in the lineup.
