Humboldt's newest physician is returning to his home territory after three years in Illinois. Dr. Cass Long will begin his practice at the UnityPoint Clinic next week. The family practice physician says he enjoys the variety afforded in general practice medicine.

By KENT THOMPSON
General practice physician, family man, college athlete, avowed comic super hero geek — there are many descriptions for Dr. Cassidy “Cass” Long, the newest doctor at UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine in Humboldt.
All of the descriptions fall short of describing the overriding passion that Dr. Long says drove him into choosing family medicine as a profession.
"I thought I was going to be an orthopedic surgeon. But the more I got to thinking about it, I didn’t think being a surgeon would sustain me. I love the one-on-one aspect that family medicine provides. To be able to work with patients and form relationships with people in the community really attracted me the most,” Long said.
Long spent most of his youth in Madison County southwest of Des Moines. He attended Wartburg College in Waverly and attended medical school at Des Moines University. He did his family residency at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines and has practiced in Galesburg, IL before moving to Humboldt Aug. 1. Dr. Long's wife, Kayla, is a native of Royal in Clay County. The couple has four young children.
Dr. Long begins his practice at UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine in Humboldt on Sept. 24.
