All 4 Humboldt wrestlers stay alive after 1st day of state tournament

All four of Humboldt's wrestlers competing in the Class 2A State Tournament kept their seasons alive after day one (Feb. 14) of the event held inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Wildcats' Joey Busse and Justin Jones are alive on the championship side while Joel Osborn and Cole Nelson remain alive on the consolation side.

Busse opened with a 12-7 victory over Garrett Jensen of Williamsburg at 145 pounds. Busse, now 44-0 on the season, will face Waukon senior Miles Hansmeier (28-14) in the quarterfinals on Friday afternoon.

Jones made quick work of his first round opponent, Clarinda's Storm Howard, and won by fall in 43 seconds at 285 pounds. Jones, 40-3 on the year, will meet Kobe Clayborne of Sioux City Heelan in Friday's quarterfinals. Clayborne is 35-1.

Nelson opened the tournament against Webster City's Camron Phetxoumphone (37-4) at 106 pounds and ended up losing 14-5. Nelson (39-13) came back in strong fashion by stopping Tyler Halloran of Clarinda, 10-3 in the consolation round. Nelson will wrestle Friday afternoon against a quarterfinal round loser.

Osborn (38-9) opened the day against No. 2 seed Thomas Bentley (25-3) of of Red Oak and ended up losing by technical fall in 4:46, 16-0. Osborn met Joseph Hofbauer of Ballard Huxley in the consolation bracket and trailed 9-2 with 1:00 left in the match when he threw Hofbauer to the mat and put him in a headlock and won by pin in 5:08. Osborn will also face a quarterfinal round loser on Friday afternoon.
