The late Bill Smith, an Olympic wrestling legend and long-time area resident who passed away in March of 2018, was inducted into the Missouri Valley Conference Athletic Hall of Fame last week.
Smith, who attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated from the school in the early 1950’s, was inducted in a ceremony in St. Louis last Friday, Mar. 8. Smith is Northern Iowa’s first inductee since Chris Buckham (track and field) was inducted in 2014.
Smith is UNI’s fifth inductee into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame since its inception in 1997. In addition to Buckham, other inductees from UNI include Molly O’Brien (volleyball) in 2013, Joey Woody (track and field) in 2012 and Iradge Ahrabi-Fard (volleyball) in 2011.
