The Humboldt Police Department (HPD) was called to a three-vehicle accident involving two injuries Friday, June 7, at 5:05 p.m. The accident occurred on Highway 3 and 6th Street North, at the north entrance to the Hy-Vee parking lot.
According to the report, a 1995 Oldsmobile Regency driven by Robert D. Clapper, 76, of Humboldt, was exiting the parking lot heading south and was attempting to make a left turn onto Highway 3. Clapper’s Oldsmobile struck a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup and livestock trailer driven by Jaxon E. Kampen, 20, of Humboldt, which was eastbound on Highway 3. Kampen said the Oldsmobile went through the stop sign and proceeded into his path of travel. Kampen said he sounded his horn and tried to get in outside lane but the Oldsmobile struck the Chevy truck and trailer broadside. The force of the collision caused Clapper’s car to enter the westbound lane on Highway 3, striking a westbound 2017 Buick Enclave sport utility vehicle driven by Sherry L. Wagner, 71, of Dakota City. Wagner said she also sounded her horn.
Clapper told the HPD he had stopped at the stop sign and looked both ways. He said the vehicles must have been traveling fast because he did not see them. Clapper was transported to Humboldt County Memorial Hospital by hospital EMS with suspected serious/incapacitating injuries. According to the police report, he was not wearing occupant protection.
Also injured in the collision was Edgar A. Wagner, 69, of Dakota City, a passenger in the Sherry Wagner SUV. Wagner was taken by EMS ground ambulance to HCMH with a report of possible pain or injury. Neither Sherry Wagner nor Jaxon Kampen were injured. There was total damage to Clapper’s Oldsmobile passenger car, disabling damage to Wagner’s Buick SUV and minor damage to Kampen’s Chevrolet pickup and livestock trailer, which was transporting sheep. No livestock were reported injured.
Assisting at the scene were HCMH Ambulance crews, the Humboldt Fire Department and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The accident remains under investigation. See more news on this and other stories in this week’s Humboldt Independent newspaper.
