Local farm leader dies from injuries sustained in fall


Local farmer Dean Coleman of Humboldt died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a farming accident at his home west of Humboldt on Monday. Coleman represented Iowa farmers statewide and nationally as a Board member of the Iowa Soybean Association and the American Soybean Association.

On Monday, Aug. 12 at 3:55 p.m., the Humboldt County Communications Center received a call of a male subject who had fallen inside an empty grain bin at 1674 230th St., west of Humboldt.
The male was identified as Dean Coleman, 62, of Humboldt. He was transported to the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital and then transferred to a Des Moines hospital by air ambulance where he passed away from injuries sustained in the fall.
The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Ambulance crew.
Coleman grew up in on a farm near Livermore and farmed in Humboldt County his entire life. He served on the American Soybean Association Board of Directors since 2016 and was on the Iowa Soybean Association Board, serving the seats of president, vice president, treasurer and at-large member.
Coleman was also very active with the Humboldt County Farm Bureau and had previously served on the Humboldt County Extension Council and Humboldt County Fair Board.
Coleman made numerous trips to Washington, D.C. and foreign countries promoting corn and soybeans. He often hosted delegations from China and other countries on his Corinth Township farm. He also worked with the local school district in teaching young children about production agriculture, as they also experienced several trips to the Coleman farm to see how things grow.
A visitation for Dean Coleman will be Thursday, Aug. 15 from 4-7 p.m. at the Faith United Methodist Church and funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the church. Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
