Humboldt’s Bella Opheim not only had the Reserve Grand Champion 4-H Market Hog overall at the Iowa State Fair, but at the Iowa State Fair Sale of Champions on Aug. 17 her hog sold for a record price of $62,500.
The sale price broke the all-time record for any species.
Another one of Bella’s hogs placed third overall. Her older brother, Jack, a freshman at Humboldt High School, placed sixth in the Intermediate Showmanship division and received a belt buckle. More than 300 competed in the intermediate showmanship division.
“It was an unbelievable week for the Opheim family,” Bella and Jack’s father, Jason, said.
It turns out 50 years ago almost to the date, Jason’s father, John Opheim, had the Grand Champion 4-H Market Hog at the Iowa State Fair.
