The Humboldt High School Wrestling Banquet, held March 10, was a night to celebrate a bevy of accomplishments.
Conference dual Co-Champs, winners of 20 plus duals for the fourth straight year, 90 dual wins for the career of the senior class, State Duals qualifiers, the first ever Girls State Champion in Kendal Clark and third place state finisher Cole Nelson. Those were a few of the many accolades earned by the HHS wrestling teams.
But it wasn’t all celebration as head coach Chad Beaman had a message for his wrestlers.
“We want to get right back in the mix. We have a lot of work to do,” Beaman said. “I’ve already got 10 or 11 things we are going to do different in practice. We were good. We need to get better.”
Beaman encouraged the underclassmen to make great decisions over the next eight months, work on their grades and put in the time in the off season.
“You get what you work for, and you get what you earn,” Beaman said. “You don’t get better just by getting a year older.”
He encouraged everyone to get in the weight room.
“Our athletic coaches have set up an excellent opportunity. Take advantage of it. You’ll see great rewards. Doing your own thing is not the best for you. I’ve never had a state champion who didn’t do the extras,” Beaman said.
Beaman talked about the growth of the wrestling program. There were a record 51 wrestlers in the middle school (7-8 grade) program this year, necessitating a split practice because of lack of room. More than 120 wrestlers took part in the youth wrestling program. Girls wrestling was added this year and they practiced in the mornings before school.
