Witzke looks back on shortened baseball season

When the middle of March arrived, Chris Witzke and his Harding University baseball team were having what was shaping up to be a pretty good season.

Witzke, a 2016 Humboldt High School graduate, enrolled in the NAIA school located in Searcy, AR, last fall after playing two seasons at Des Moines Area Community College in Boone.
“We were off to one of the best starts in school history with an 18-6 record and second in the Great American Conference (8-4), down by one game. The weekend our season was canceled we were playing the team (Union) in Tennessee that was in first-place. It was a series that would help decide the outcome of the conference,” Witzke said.
“It was kind of a bummer that we couldn’t get those last three games in of that series because we had cemented ourselves as the top two teams in the conference. We were right there and it ended early,” Witzke said.
The coronavirus pandemic all but ended the season abruptly.
“We were off to a good run. Right when things ended it felt like our team had really come together and the fun part of the season was just starting,” Witzke said.
