Council OK's nearly $3 million street project

This entry captured the essence of the 4th of July Parade in Humboldt, which was held last Saturday night, thanks to the efforts of several local families who wanted to see a parade. Humboldt Mayor Dan Scholl thanked the volunteers for their efforts at Monday's Humboldt City Council meeting.

The Humboldt City Council made a decision last winter that getting ahead of the curve in the process of maintaining and improving the city’s wide city streets was a top priority.
It also made the decision that a large public works project for the 2020-21 fiscal year, which started last Wednesday, was important. To do so, the city would have to borrow money and pay it back in the form of issuing general obligation debt. All of those things came into sharper focus during Monday’s meeting of the Humboldt City Council.
The Council held a public hearing on the 2020 Roadway System Maintenance Project.
Nick Frederiksen, engineer with ISG, the city’s civil engineering firm, updated the Council on the work to be done. The engineer’s estimated cost of the project was $2.96 million. One bid was received, that coming from Blacktop Service Company of Humboldt, for a total cost of $2,540,577.31, a full $427,183 less than the engineer’s estimate.
“This project is vast and all encompassing over different roadway maintenance recommendations and treatments we’ve done in the past. There is joint leveling, seal coating, partial depth patching, and a significant amount of two-inch milling and filling and significant four-inch asphalt resurfacing," Frederiksen said.
