Mount Vernon upends Humboldt in state softball opener, 7-4

No. 5 seed Mount Vernon took an early lead and used a five-run seventh inning to upend No. 4 Humboldt, 7-4 in the opening round of the Class 3A state softball tournament in Fort Dodge Monday night (July 27).

The Mustangs, 21-4, collected nine hits off of Humboldt pitcher Ellie Jacobson, who struck out eight, walked none and hit two batters in the final game of her high school career.

Carlie Thompson, Jori Hajek and Ellie Jacobson each had three hits to lead Humboldt. Kendal Clark made two hits and drove in two runs.

Humboldt's season ends at 20-3 overall.
