It was Christmas in August for tenants of apartments owned by Duane Zeller of Humboldt. On Saturday, Aug. 22, tenants of his 34 apartments received 30 to 40 pounds of pork each courtesy of Zeller.
Zeller, owner of Hoag’s Plumbing and Heating, said earlier this spring while he was eating breakfast Dakota City Mayor Sean Phillips told him due to packing plant shut downs due to Covid-19 there were free pigs available.
“The only thing was we had to pick up the pigs by noon that day. I called my brothers to see if they wanted some free pigs. I was on the phone all morning coordinating getting a trailer, who wanted pigs and where we would take the pigs until they could get into a locker,” Zeller said.
It was decided to pick up 20 pigs. Read about finding a home for the pigs and how they ended up being a present for Duane Zeller's apartment tenants in this week's Humboldt Independent.
