Algona man held for shooting in Rolfe


Joshua J. Schmidt, 18, of Algona, is being held on $25,000 cash bond in Pocahontas County on a charge of attempted murder after allegedly shooting at a subject in the town of Rolfe last Saturday.

An Algona man is being held in Pocahontas County on an attempted murder charge.
According to the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) an Algona man has been arrested related to an incident that occurred on Saturday, Sept. 12.
On Sept. 12, deputies were called to 102 Grant St. in Rolfe, after witnesses reported that a shooting had taken place. According to the PCSO, an argument over property occurred at the residence in Rolfe. Joshua Jordan Schmidt, 18, of Algona, then allegedly pointed and fired a shotgun at another person. Schmidt subsequently fled the scene of the crime on foot, carrying a shotgun. The subject who was shot at was not injured in the incident.
After an exhaustive search by several Pocahontas County authorities, Schmidt was taken into custody without incident in the early morning hours of Monday, Sept. 14. He was charged with attempted murder, a class B felony. He was booked into the Pocahontas County Jail and is being held on a $25,000 cash bond.
As with any charge, Schmidt is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the Laurens Police Department, Pocahontas Police Department and the Pocahontas County Attorney’s Office.
Magistrate Judge Greg Stoebe ordered counsel for Schmidt at state expense.
