UDMO and Food Pantry to relocate downtown

Humboldt Hy-Vee Food Store delivered 50 meal packages to the food pantry last week. Store Manager Roger Townsend (pictured) said Hy-Vee gave over 20,000 Thanksgiving meals in its eight-state region. Each bag contained corn, beans, stuffing, five pounds of potatoes, along with a coupon for a free turkey or $14 of meat products, along with a pie and 12-piece package of dinner rolls. The Humboldt County Ministerial Association and Upper Des Moines Opportunity Inc. (UDMO) in Humboldt County have cooperatively operated the Humboldt County Food Pantry the past few years. Now the organizations are joining forces for a central location in downtown Humboldt that will serve as the new Food Pantry location and the service office for UDMO.
The Ministerial Association has announced that they have agreed to purchase the former In Design Consignment Shop at 419 Sumner Avenue from Matt Brown for a price of $40,000. Josh Koehn, associate pastor at the Oak Hill Church and treasurer of the Humboldt County Ministerial Association, reports that the organization expects a cost of $50,000 to renovate the interior of the building, which will serve as the new Food Pantry location and the administrative offices for UDMO in Humboldt County. The Association is soliciting a contractor for the project, with a completion date expected sometime in the mid-to-late spring.
“The renovation will include a complete remodel, but the building itself is structurally sound and there will only be minimal changes to the exterior. This will be a good use of downtown space. It will better serve the needs of the local families needing community assistance through UDMO and food and personal goods through the Food Pantry,” Koehn said.
